Nestled on the shores of the Indian Ocean in southern Sri Lanka is the 057 Guesthouse Hiriketiya, a stunning architectural feat by Atelier Abraha Achermann.

The guesthouse boasts a seamless interplay between the indoors and outdoors, with a series of courtyards and walls surrounding four guest rooms that offer direct views of the ocean. The guesthouse is constructed in small steps, with raw surfaces that reflect the local craftsmanship and available resources. The flooring is at varying levels, creating a beautiful pattern of thresholds and spatial hierarchies while also allowing for massive rainfall during the rainy season.

The absence of windows or glass only adds to the unique charm of the guesthouse, with wind-permeable wooden shutters providing a natural means of ventilation. Two outdoor staircases lead to a public roof terrace with a fireplace, where guests can enjoy a breathtaking angled view of the coastline and the sea. The 057 Guesthouse Hiriketiya is a testament to the beauty of simplicity and the power of a thoughtful design that prioritizes the surrounding natural environment.
