Nestled in the vibrant Porta Romana district of Milan, Sagoma Studio’s latest creation, L’ALTRO Tramezzino, seamlessly blends historical reverence with contemporary minimalism.

Founded by Marco Mannacio Soderini and Benito Zanzico in 2023, the studio demonstrates its mastery by transforming a modest 75-square-meter commercial property into an essentialist haven on Via Mantova 13. Every meticulous choice underscores the purity of form and intentionality that defines Sagoma Studio’s aesthetic ethos.

Rather than an orthodox restoration, the architects embraced the existing building’s historical narrative. Original terrazzo floors, bearing authentic signs of wear, remain a focal point, juxtaposed with newly sandblasted walls that unveil fragments of the building's storied past. This nuanced interplay between preserved elements and contemporary additions establishes a space that resonates deeply with Milan's layered architectural heritage.

The precise selection of materials further elevates L’ALTRO’s refined minimalism. Stark contrasts emerge from a carefully curated palette, where robust concrete, tactile wood, and industrial steel coexist harmoniously with the subtle, earthy tones of walls and ceilings. Thoughtfully chosen furnishings, such as Klemens Schillinger chairs and a sophisticated NM3 counter lamp, enhance the sophisticated ambience, each contributing seamlessly to the studio's overarching narrative.

However, the design reaches a provocative climax in the daringly monochromatic red bathroom. This strikingly theatrical room offers a captivating counterpoint to the space’s otherwise muted elegance, exemplifying Sagoma Studio’s skillful balance of tradition and innovation. It boldly articulates the studio’s willingness to push design boundaries without compromising the harmonious rhythm that defines the project.

Milan is where form meets function and fashion shakes hands with architecture. It’s a place of precision and flair, of espresso-fueled mornings and concept store afternoons. A city that speaks softly, but leaves a lasting impression on those who listen.
