Zinodotou Studio by Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects
Hitoshi Arato
Dec 8, 2023

In the Pagrati neighborhood of Athens, a 1970s storage space has been ingeniously converted into a new design studio by Georgios Apostolopoulos Architects.

This conversion represents more than a mere architectural renovation; it embodies the firm's innovative approach to design, seamlessly marrying functionality with community connection.

The renovation was guided by the ambition to redefine the traditional design studio into a vibrant, creative environment. An open-plan layout was chosen to encourage a transparent and collaborative workspace, where different sections of the office interact fluidly, fostering a culture of collective creativity.

A distinctive feature of the design is the preservation and enhancement of the large window openings facing the street. These openings, now framed with custom-made iron windows and doors, establish a visual and interactive connection with the neighborhood. The use of theater-like curtains adds an element of tranquility, framing the view from the office and offering serene seclusion when drawn.

Internally, the studio is divided into two main areas: a workspace outfitted with bespoke desks, and a meeting area adjacent to the kitchen. Hidden doors are cleverly integrated to conceal the bathroom and storage areas, maintaining the studio’s uncluttered, gallery-like ambiance. The selection of materials further enhances the studio's aesthetic. Custom-made desks and benches from marine plywood coexist with iron elements in the kitchen, stair handrail, and windows, creating a cohesive design language. Sandblasted moca marble for the window sills extends from the interior to the exterior, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The walls, finished in a calming beige texture, and the microcement flooring, chosen for its textured look, contribute to the studio’s welcoming atmosphere.

The exterior walls are treated with a similar textured finish, ensuring a seamless flow throughout the space. This meticulous attention to detail in materials and finishes not only elevates the studio's visual appeal but also highlights the firm’s dedication to comprehensive, thoughtful design.
