Designed by architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça together with Studio Astolfi, The Verse is a boutique aparthotel located in Lisbon’s São Bento district that blends the atmosphere of a home with the services of a hotel.
Spread across 15 serviced apartments, the project approaches hospitality through the lens of domestic living. Instead of conventional hotel rooms, the spaces are organised as compact homes — with kitchens, living areas, and, in some cases, private patios or terraces. The layout encourages longer stays and a slower rhythm, allowing guests to experience the building more like a residence than a temporary accommodation.
Studio Astolfi’s interiors place a strong emphasis on Portuguese material culture and craft. Warm wood tones, natural stone, textured plaster and tactile surfaces create a calm yet layered material palette. Custom furniture pieces and carefully selected artworks appear throughout the apartments, adding personality while maintaining a quiet architectural clarity.
One of the most distinctive elements of the interiors are the recessed sleeping alcoves, often finished in deep green tones. These niches frame the beds within compact architectural volumes, creating intimate spaces that feel both playful and protective, while subtly structuring the rooms.
On the ground floor, the reception, bar and lobby merge into a single social environment that acts as the heart of the building. Rather than a formal hotel lobby, the space feels closer to a living room open to the city — a place where guests and locals can meet, work or pause during the day.
Positioned between apartment living and boutique hospitality, The Verse offers a contemporary interpretation of Lisbon’s residential atmosphere, where architecture, materiality and everyday life quietly intersect.
