Tom Hegen has released a collection of photos named The Coal Mine Series. The eye-pleasing photos focuses on coal mining and the consequences it causes to the environment.
“Lignite is still one of Germany's largest energy suppliers. Energy production from coal has enabled our civilization to make great economic and social progress, but at the same time it represents one of our greatest ecological problems. Burning fossil energy sources contributes significantly to global warming” says the photographer.
Tom Hegen documents the scars of our planet earth made by human destructive activity. Using a variety of techniques and tools, including small aircraft, quadcopters and even hot air balloons, he has begun to photograph from the air the places around the world where human intervention is most dramatic and where nature and factory intersect. His expressive images give these places an abstract painting-like quality.
