Shonan Christ Church by Takeshi Hosaka Architects
@zaxarovcom
Sep 30, 2020

Takeshi Hosaka designed the 175-square-metre Shonan Christ Church for a site along the coast of Sagami Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.

The convex shapes produce a gradient tonality, while bands of direct sunlight accent the space and surfaces. Located in the coastal japanese city of Fujisawa, the building is a five-minute walk from the Shonan Sea. The concrete roof is made of six separate forms, which represent the six days of creation as documented in the biblical book of genesis, while the worship space below symbolizes the seventh day.

"Direct sunlight was inappropriate for the time of the service. This construction was designed to create a space of skylight during the time zone for the service – 10:30 until 12:00 on Sunday morning – and direct sunlight during other time zones," said Hosaka.
