'Pigment House' is masterful blend of light, space, and colour designed by Unknown Works.

Unknown Works, a celebrated architectural studio based in London, has dramatically reimagined a once dark townhouse into the vibrant 'Pigment House.' This delightful dwelling ingeniously marries the practical requirements of a family home with a bold exploration of colours and textures.

Initially hemmed in by its urban surroundings, the townhouse was a closed, somber space. Confronted with the mission of instilling openness and fluidity, Unknown Works commenced an extensive excavation. This methodical operation allowed natural light to flood the home's lower levels, dispelling its former gloominess. The process also ingeniously formed a series of visually engaging play spaces for the children.

An extraordinary feature of Pigment House is the multifunctional concrete retaining wall. Acting as a stairway, seating area, and an outdoor kitchen, it injects a splash of colour into the landscape. The wall's textured concrete formwork is masterfully contrasted by contemporary balustrades made of draped stainless steel mesh, providing a unique modern edge to the design.

Unknown Works further amplified the sense of cohesion and openness inside the house. The ground floor, previously segmented in a typical Victorian layout, now features an integrated kitchen and sitting room. The addition of a large kitchen island offers a welcoming communal spot for family activities, reinforcing the home's core design ethos of unity and connectedness.

The use of dusty pink hues throughout the house is a nod to the clients' travels in Mexico and Luiz Barragan's iconic use of colour. This consistent colour palette not only adds warmth to the home but also offers a vibrant contrast against London's often grey skies.

Completed in late 2022 despite the economic challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, Pigment House stands as a testament to Unknown Works' unwavering dedication to overcoming obstacles and turning constraints into beautiful opportunities. This project showcases how thoughtful design can produce an enchanting living space that is both practical and visually engaging.
