Beneath the towering sandstone cliffs of Portugal's west coast, where the pounding surf meets the rugged shoreline, lies a hidden gem that invites you to immerse yourself in the spirit of surf culture and well-being. This is no ordinary hotel - it's a former clifftop farmstead that has undergone a radical transformation at the hands of two visionary design firms, Pedra Silva Arquitectos and Astet

The result is Aethos Ericeira, a 50-room retreat that exudes a cool, contemporary vibe while retaining the rustic charm of its rural roots, a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic, rejuvenating experience that blends tradition and innovation with effortless ease.

Drawing inspiration from its enviable location, Aethos Ericeira blends the rustic charm of the rural landscape with elements of surf culture, creating a seamless aesthetic that captures the essence of this idyllic destination. The elevated position provides uninterrupted ocean views, with grand windows and protruding box windows offering the perfect vantage point to take in the natural beauty.

Previously a rundown farmhouse, the property has undergone a remarkable transformation into a secluded retreat. Pedra Silva Arquitectos oversaw the building work, restoring the original structure's light-rendered walls, clay tile roof, and arched recesses while updating other parts with timber slats and metal paneling. The result is a beautiful balance between old and new, with the recent extensions and new construction given their own distinct character.

Astet's interior design strategy centers around providing a year-round experience that's both functional and cozy, regardless of the weather outside. Warm natural materials like wood, velvet, and rattan combine with cooler surfaces like marble and stone to create a refined yet welcoming ambiance. The hotel reception is particularly striking, with original arched windows providing an uninterrupted view of the ocean. The soft-green tiles and large louver screens, together with carefully curated furniture from Iberian brands like Omelette and Scandinavian TAKT, add a sophisticated touch to the space.

The bedrooms are minimal and chic, with custom headboards, muted fabrics, and wooden flooring creating a sense of warmth and comfort. Aethos Ericeira boasts a range of facilities, including a restaurant, gym, spacious swimming pool area with heated saltwater pool, meditation and yoga deck, and a spa with hammam, hot slab, and treatment rooms. The landscape works seamlessly to connect these spaces, linking them with pathways that lead to the beach.

Aethos Ericeira is one of five properties under the Aethos brand, each offering a unique and mindful experience for guests. This serene retreat offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Portugal's west coast.
