TP-H Residence by Jermyn Manthripragada Architecture-
"The project is the addition of a dining room, reading room and two bedroom suites to an existing 1948 adobe-brick house. Careful consideration was given to the siting of the new addition and its relationship to existing trees, the original house and a previous addition completed by JM-A in 2011 (a writing studio called the ‘Box Office’). It employs the material and formal language developed for the Box Office: spare, platonic boxes of a perceptual mass detailed precisely at their junctions to openings with a material thinness.

Four volumes control view and orchestrate movement through their various internal and external alignments. The reading of the solid/void relationship oscillates between additive and subtractive processes--on the one hand understood as a series of connected volumes while on the other seen as an initially pure box from which two L-forms are removed. The result is a rhythmic reciprocity between interior space and garden. A strangeness of scale, already present on the suburban site with an unusually large garden and mature trees, is embraced in the addition as well. A low horizontal window, for example, adjacent to the bath in the master suite, has an uncanny presence at its exterior condition through its positional ambiguity."

Written in their Karma by James Edwin Bettney-
"These images represent over 3 years of exploration into the lives of women in Nepal who face an intolerable struggle due to long standing social and religious conformity within the national community. In Nepal a widow is looked upon with great animosity. It is believed that the actions in their previous life contribute to the death of their husband. They have therefore been ostracised for generations, losing their status in both the home and society.

This work could not have been completed without the cooperation of WHR-SWG (Women for Human Rights - Single Women’s Group) whose dedicated and persistent campaigning has not only been the catalyst for real and palpable change within Nepal but is now extending it’s caring arms to protect the single women that are affected throughout the entirety of South Asia."

Sea Blues by Yael Malka and Cait Oppermann-
Brooklyn-based artists Cait Oppermann & Yael Malka backpacked for 70 days this past year and created a book of photographs taken over the course of that time. They traveled through Turkey, Morocco and several countries in Europe and returned to compile the book, which is called Sea Blues. Here is an excerpt from the book's statement:

"Throughout the trip, the only consistent form of structure was the company of one another. Time became elastic and weeks departed from what our knowledge of what a “week” meant. As a result, we have collected an array of photographs which emote our sense of constant displacement yet express a deep love of travel and discovery. Upon returning home, the reality of our trip ceased to exist, yet we came back with these images as proof of our “experience.” The photographs themselves are a kind of evidence of our disorientation."

Casas Reais by Concheiro de Montard-
"Lighting up spaces: Our first aim was to be able to comprehend the existing house, a space fragmented in small rooms with little light, to then visualize it as one single premise full of light. With this concept in mind, we decided to use the most out of its lighting possibilities using the two existing natural light sources in the house. The gallery facing north and three small openings on the east and west sides located on the thick stone walls. On one side, the house extends to the gallery embracing the sun light and the views of the old town. On the other side, the small existing windows are perceived as a whole, creating a space with pleasant and changing brightness throughout the day.

Densifying the space: Under this new concept, the house is conceived as a collection of spaces with specific character. All laid out in a continuous way so they can benefit from the confluence of the different sources of light. The rooms become visible due to the articulations and expansions of the space through furniture design. In this way, the room is always acting as the foreground leaving the following rooms as second and third backgrounds, which give density and depth to the space.

The furniture harmonizes and allows to a continuous perception of the space. The existing stone wall, with its lime mortar texture, it is shown to its fullest, connecting the living room – kitchen – master bed room in a sequence of spaces. The new and continuous carpentry work, smooth and satin finished, organizes the living room – entrance – dressing room – study room sequence.

Objects trouves: Three existing pieces act as objects trouvés interacting with the new elements and giving to the dwelling its own character. The lareira, traditional Galician stone fire-place, turns into a resting place in the study room. The original kitchen´s hydraulic tiles are rearranged creating a tapestry which extends throughout the new space in the kitchen. The wooden gallery integrates visually with the interior space through the new carpentry work, which serves as a filter between the indoor and outdoor environments."

Södrakull Frösakull by Daniel Carlsten-
"In his book Södrakull Frösakull, the artist Mikael Olsson explores the legacy of the late designer and architect Bruno Mathsson through two buildings that Mathsson once designed and lived in. The project raises questions about memory, time and transience, and depicts the relationship between man, nature and architecture in a series of images created from experimentation and voyeurism.

The same concepts and methodology have also dictated the terms in the design process of the book. The book design reflects the photography and the architecture’s balance between the beautiful and the non-perfect, enhancing Mikael Olsson’s artistic intentions with the goal of defining the book as an independent work alongside Mathsson’s creations."

Off Grid Home in Extremadura by ÃBATON Architects-
"Located in a privileged environment in the province of Cáceres, the goal was to transform an abandoned stable into a family home by completely renovating it in a way that would be consistent and respectful with the environment. At the end, the Studio decided that building from scratch was the best option as the stable was in a terrible shape.

High on a hill and far from city water or an electrical grid, a thorough investigation resulted in the addition of photovoltaic and hydro power (weighted toward solar in summer and hydro in winter) and worked to ensure the home wouldn't use much energy. The building's original orientation also helped as southern exposure allowed for the sun to be the main source of heat during the winter. A generous eave prevents much sun from entering the home during summer, thus keeping it cool. Large wooden shutters that slide closed like a second skin, cover the large windows at night to trap in most of the home's daily solar heat gain.

As the building is located far from city water but perfectly located below two streams that flow year round the water is pure and can be used for drinking and bathing. The swimming pool acts as a holding tank for use in irrigation. In the interior nature has been incorporated almost to every room in the house: bathrooms with views of the interior patio and its stone water fountain, bedrooms with huge picture windows overlooking the countryside.

The position of the architecture is as it was originally and the material used are also the same though given the home's crumbling state the façade was built with a mix of cement and local stone. In the interior, supporting walls were replaced by light metal pillars, the haylofts in the upper area were converted into bedrooms and the enormous central lounge serves different purposes. In short, a mix of modern cement and iron beams coexist with well-worn stone, weather-beaten wood and local stone."

Extrusion Bowls by Apparatu-
"This is one of the pieces which resulted from the workshop “Fragil” held by Apparatu in summer 2010. Guim Espelt i Estopà one of the participants, designed the pieces after discovering an apparently impossible texture. The process began with the deformation of a hollow cylinder of extrusioned clay, after which we focussed on the cracks that were generated.

By trial and error we hit on the formula in the wheel: for the creation of a bowl, the only way to conserve the cracks is to place the cylinder in the wheel and push from the centre towards the periphery. By expanding the grey mass while spinning, unique and random textures appear on the surface leaving the coloured interior as the only controlled element."

28 Posti Restaurant by Francesco Faccin-
"The place is intimate and welcoming, only 28 seats. It is located in a quiet and private street in the heart of the Navigli’s area, and it has taken the place of the historical Karaoke CantaMilano. The architectural project aimed to bring the room to its original state with the incorporation of new furniture elements produced internally with recycled materials. The kitchen is the soul of the project and reveals the preparation of the food plates to the clients thanks to a slit window that can be quickly glanced while entering the domain. The construction itself was carried on by the convicts of the Penitentiary Institute of Bollate (Istituto Penitenziario di Bollate), that were able to benefit from the 21st Article taking a place within the construction site. Subsequently to this important experience, the restaurant will continue to make efforts to reintegrate professionally these underprivileged categories.

The chef Caterina Malerba was born in Calabria, precisely in Pizzo Calabro, a gorgeous town along the Tyrrhenian sea where, together with her husband opens her first restaurant. Since 1995 to nowadays they have known how to deliver high quality and refined taste recipes that come from the traditional roots. The remarkable passion for food, the curiosity towards new techniques and the selection of high quality products have allowed the chef in just a few years to maintain a proper identity within a very difficult field. Our kitchen is directed towards ethic values, it is accurate about the food quality and it is respectful with the environment and with the equity of the production processes.

BOLLATE LAB: Liveinslums NGO Onlus, partner of the project, has started within the prison a construction and carpentry laboratory to produce the furniture for the restaurant. The lab is attended by the detained that are unable to go out and these were identified by the prison educators and later on followed by the association members during the training period and all along the work. Inside the lab tables, doors, cabins and cupboards were built; all designed by Francesco Faccin.

The restaurant has in its program also to become a showcase window of these products and to create a selling network in straight contact with the Bollate prison. On the other hand, the laboratory will continue to develop projects related to the food but not only, with a packed program of external hosts that make part of Milan’s design world, it will aim to create and interpret a new line of furniture along with the convicts."

The project is sponsored by: “Assessorato alle politiche sociali del comune di Milano”; Seconda casa di reclusione di Bollate diretta da Massimo Parisi; Camera di Commercio di Milano; Settore artigianato e attività produttive del Comune di Milano
